Meet five-year-old Rhys (pronounced “Rise”) Sarkany, pictured here with his parents Dan and Kelly at Fording River Operations in September 2020. The family made a special visit to the operation to see the 10 shovel, which was recently renamed Rhys in honour of the incredible strength of this little boy from Elkford who was diagnosed with leukemia in September 2020. The name was chosen as part of a naming contest for 10 shovel, with the winning submission coming from Ben Brewer, Maintenance Heavy Duty Mechanic, Fording River Operations.
Rhys began his eight-month intensive treatment at BC Children’s Hospital in January 2020 with his parents by his side. The treatment journey will take three years, but with a loving family and supportive community, Rhys will fight this battle with all the strength of the 10 shovel!
Teck employee and Lead, Occupational Hygienist Dan Sarkany is based in our Sparwood office.
“How fitting and what an honour it is for him to have the biggest shovel in the world named after him. And what a tribute Teck has bestowed on all cancer patients to have chosen the name “Rhys” for arguably the strongest machine in the world; reminding everyone that all those who battle cancer must rise up to their challenges every day with all the strength in the world. It’s our hope that this is an inspiration for all others to do the same for whatever challenges they may face. Thank you.”- The Sarkany Family
