  1. /

Helping stop the spread of COVID-19 has required a renewed commitment from all of us to the principles of Courageous Safety Leadership.

At Teck, we know ‘safety starts with me’, and that each of us has the responsibility to speak up when it comes to the health and safety of those around us. Employees from across Teck have shared some of the ways they’re taking action to protect their co-workers, families, friends and communities against COVID-19.

Thank you to all of those who are speaking up to help stop the spread.

“I am practising physical distancing to stop the spread of COVID-19 because I know that stopping the spread starts with me.”

Ben Eby, Machinist, Highland Valley Copper; son, brother and husband

“I’m speaking up about the importance of diligent hand hygiene at work and at home as part of my role as a First Aid Attendant.”

Aniko Hawthorn, Protective Services Officer, Highland Valley Copper; mother and co-worker

“I am staying informed and practising physical distancing to keep my crew and their families healthy and safe. Stopping the spread. It starts with me.”

Blake Ledoux, Senior Supervisor, Mine Operations, Highland Valley Copper; father, husband and co-worker

“I’m speaking up about the importance of following all preventative measures that can help stop the spread of COVID-19, while also not losing sight of our everyday hazards and tasks.”

Kelsey Riley, Millwright, Highland Valley Copper; son, brother, husband, father and friend

“What am I doing to stop the spread? Being prepared. Whether it's training, equipment or PPE, we need to be ready to respond while keeping ourselves safe. It’s important to be cautious but not afraid. Fear causes you to act irrationally; caution allows you to assess hazards and manage risk.”

Gabe Bouliane, Fire Captain, Trail Operations; brother, father, son and firefighter

“I’m practising physical distancing to help stop the spread. By splitting my time working from home and on site, visiting community businesses only during non-peak hours and only when necessary, and washing my hands frequently and thoroughly, I’m helping to keep my co-workers, family and friends healthy.”

Trevor Allegretto, 9705 Safety Chair and Environmental Coordinator, Lead Zinc Smelter, Trail Operations; son, brother, friend and co-worker

“I'm physically distancing by working from home, communicating with my co-workers electronically—with my four-legged co-workers by my side to ease the strain. Stopping the spread. It starts with me!”

Helen Parker-Hall, Human Resources Coordinator, Trail Operations; wife, daughter, granddaughter, friend and co-worker

“Our family is speaking up about the importance of practising physical distancing to stop the spread while also staying physically and mentally healthy.”

Tony Hough, Sr. Process/Control Systems Analyst, Trail Operations; father and husband

“I practise enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols to keep myself, my co-workers and my family safe and healthy. Together, with each of us taking to heart the measures implemented by Teck, we can continue to operate in a safe and responsible manner.”

Owen Bryan, Heavy Duty Mechanic, Trail Operations; father, husband and co-worker

“As a nurse, I practise physical distancing and handwashing to protect myself and others. These practices are so important to help keep vulnerable populations and people with underlying medical conditions from acquiring this illness. Let’s keep up the good work protecting ourselves and others at work and at home.”

Sarah Timmins, Occupational Health Nurse, Trail Operations; wife, mom and grandma

“I’m speaking up about the importance of practising social distancing at work in the Heavy Equipment shop and of using all proper PPE in the dining hall and Personnel Accommodations Complex. My wife and son have groceries delivered to the house and have not gone out unless it was absolutely necessary.”

Peter Lambert, Heavy Equipment Mechanic Level 6, Red Dog; volunteer firefighter, husband, dad, and friend

“I've committed to change my rotational schedule to a 6x2, after 10 years of being on a 2x1, to reduce travel and comply with my community's "hunker down" social distancing order. This will increase the health and safety of my household, my co-workers and the people in my community.”

Nicole Shellabarger, Sr. Environmental Technician Level 5, Red Dog; Iñupiaq, EMT, seamstress, wife and best friend

“At work, I'm speaking up about the importance of sanitizing my area often and being careful what I touch without proper PPE. At home, I spend more time outdoors to make social and physical distancing feel natural. In my community, I lecture family and friends about the potential impact of not following proper guidelines and how that puts themselves and others at risk.”

Tristen Pattee, Environmental Technician, Red Dog; Ivisaapaat community member, small business owner, and subsistence provider

“I am practising social distancing and hand hygiene to help keep myself, my co-workers and my family safe and healthy, and to make sure there’s a healthy future for my grandchildren.”

Jason Avery, Floor Person IV, Materials Management, Red Dog; grandfather, father, husband, friend and co-worker

“I’m practising physical distancing to ensure the health of my father who is undergoing radiation treatments for cancer, and my mother, who is now on her own at home.”

Danica MacGregor, Engineering Clerk, Fording River Operations; daughter, friend and co-worker

“I’m speaking up about the importance of frequent and thorough handwashing so my daughter Cora can show her grandparents how she eats cheese sometime soon!”

Cam Heaton, Senior Engineer Supervisor Mining, Castle Project; father and son

“I’m speaking up about physical distancing and staying home as much as possible because I want to keep my loved ones safe and healthy.”

David Danchuk, Planner Maintenance, Cardinal River Operations; friend, son and co-worker

“I’m practising frequent and thorough handwashing to help keep my grandmother safe and healthy.”

David Bennison, Technician Desktop Support, Elkview Operations; grandson, son, friend and co-worker

“I am practising physical distancing because I believe we all have a role to play in preventing the spread of COVID-19.”

Katty Ramos, Camp Administrator, Quebrada Blanca; daughter, co-worker and friend

“I am practicing physical distancing and staying home because by doing so, I am protecting myself and my family. Stopping the spread. It starts with me.”

Lucia Olivares Loyola, Senior Community Specialist, Santiago; mother, daughter, friend and co-worker

“I am speaking up about the importance of frequent and thorough handwashing so my team and all those who work with them can go home safe and healthy every day.”

Lucas Valenzuela, Plant Operator, Quebrada Blanca; son, friend and co-worker

“By maintaining physical distance and following all the control protocols in place, we are taking care of ourselves and keeping our families healthy and safe at home.”

Iron Palma, Plant Operator, Quebrada Blanca; friend, son and co-worker

“I am reinforcing habits such as frequent and thorough handwashing to reduce the risk of catching the virus and to keep my co-workers safe. Stopping the spread. It starts with me."

Milya Bordones, Mechanic, Carmen de Andacollo; daughter, friend and co-worker

“I am staying home and practising physical distancing to do my part to avoid affecting those at risk, and, above all, our families. Stopping the spread. It starts with me.”

Miguel Muñoz, Contract Administrator, Carmen de Andacollo; son, friend and co-worker
