The Fording River Extension Project is a proposed extension of Teck’s existing Fording River steelmaking coal mine located in the East Kootenay region in southeastern British Columbia. The Project represents an opportunity to extend the lifespan of Fording River and maintain the jobs and economic benefits generated by the operation in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.
The FRX Project will extend mining to provide a new source of steelmaking coal. The Project’s location and extensive deposits of mineable steelmaking coal make it a logical extension of the Fording River Operations. Over time, Teck anticipates that all steelmaking coal for Fording River will come from the FRX Project area.
The extension of mining will allow for continued social and economic contributions to the local and regional economies, extending the life of Fording River Operations by several decades.
Project Location
The Fording River Extension Project is located adjacent and to the south of Teck’s existing Fording River Operations. By making use of existing equipment and infrastructure at Fording River, the Project will minimize the footprint of the new activities.
The coordinated assessment process is expected to take several years and will include multiple government designated opportunities for public participation and input. The Fording River Extension Project is currently in the design stage, during which time Teck is defining specific aspects of the Project using the feedback gathered from Indigenous Peoples, local communities and governments.
Regulatory Process
The Fording River Extension (FRX) Project is subject to a coordinated provincial and federal assessment process under the B.C. Environmental Assessment Act and federal Impact Assessment Act. The coordinated assessment will provide a comprehensive evaluation of the potential effects of the Project, including identification of related mitigation and management measures, on environmental, economic, social, heritage and health values. There are multiple opportunities for public comment and feedback throughout the process.
The B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) and the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) are working together in a coordinated manner to align key milestones and deliverables to the extent possible. Final assessment decisions are made independently by the responsible provincial and federal Ministers.
