Teck is committed to protecting the rights of our employees, contractors and communities. To that end, Teck's San Nicolás project, a 50:50 joint venture with Agnico Eagle Mines Limited located in the Zacatecas State in central Mexico, has created a Human Rights Action Plan. The plan is based on analysis conducted on salient human rights risks and intersections with key functions of the project, including health and safety, environment, security, and social management. It sets out actions to implement day-to-day integration of human rights considerations, extensive human rights training, and engagement with relevant authorities. Additionally, it includes activities to promote human rights knowledge and awareness in communities. Further implementation of the Human Rights Action Plan includes conducting human rights awareness campaigns, and proactively advancing gender equality and providing additional training on the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights in areas of influence.
A key pillar of the Human Rights Action Plan is a collaboration agreement with the Zacatecas State Human Rights Commission (CEDHZ), an autonomous public body supported by the Political Constitution of the State of Zacatecas. The San Nicolás and CEDHZ partnership creates and carries out initiatives that promote and protect the rights of workers and the community through training, sharing information at community meetings, and links with government and non-government entities. The San Nicolás team engages with the commission through meetings and site visits and regularly interviews employees, community members and local officials. The commission also reinforces the protection of worker rights through crew talks, workshops and other daily activities. The collaboration agreement with CEDHZ formalizes our commitment as a responsible company in promoting and protecting human rights in both our internal and external practices.
