Zinc Saves Lives Battery Recycling Campaign Launches

October 21, 2014

On October 2, we launched the Zinc Saves Lives Battery Recycling Campaign at We Day Toronto to keep batteries out of landfills and help get zinc to the children who need it most. The campaign continues at We Day Vancouver on October 22 and We Day Calgary on November 3.

As one of the world’s largest producers of zinc, Teck is committed to raising awareness about, and helping solve, the global issue of zinc deficiency. Zinc deficiency is a global health challenge – 2 billion people worldwide are affected and nearly 450,000 children die every year from complications associated with zinc deficiency. Our Zinc & Health program works with international organizations to help deliver life-saving zinc treatments to those in need.

The Zinc Saves Lives Battery Recycling Campaign provides We Day participants with the opportunity to reduce the amount of electronic waste in landfills and help save a child’s life. Teck has been raising awareness about Zinc & Health at We Day as a National Platinum Sponsor since 2011.

Every AA battery contains the amount of zinc needed to save the lives of six children. For every battery recycled during our campaign, Teck will donate the value of zinc it contains to UNICEF in support of our Zinc & Health partnership in India.

Teck has partnered with UNICEF since 2009 in Nepal, Peru and Namibia, and recently announced a $5 million partnership to scale up access to zinc and oral rehydration salts in India.

Interested in donating used batteries?

If you are attending We Day Vancouver on October 22 or We Day Calgary on November 3, bring your used household batteries to We Day and drop them in our Battery Bin at the entrance or at the Zinc & Health booth on the concourse.

You can also drop off used batteries at any Call2Recycle collection depot. To find a collection depot near you, visit the Call2Recycle website. After you drop off the batteries, please report the number of batteries recycled at Zinc & Health to participate in the campaign.
